Course objectives
The aim of this course is to develop students' practical skills and to enhance their competencies of translation from English into Czech via a training of methods to be used when translating various types of texts and using specific tools.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will be able to:
- effectively use corpuses, databases and dictionaries in translation;
- use subtitling software to translate film subtitles;
- know the specifics of theatre translation;
- consider the benefits and risks of working as a literary translator;
- evaluate the success of translation decisions in terms of their functionality;
- analyze the possibilities of using translation in foreign language acquisition;
- use the peer evaluation method.

Teaching methods
6 workshops 4*45 minutes. Each workshop is going to consist of 3 basic parts: the instructor's lecture (intro into the topic); discussion; hands-on training.
Assessment methods
Students need to hand in translation assignments during the semester. In lieu of an exam, students hand in a portfolio with protocols about three workshops of their own choice, including completed tasks and homework, their reflection of the skills and knowledge they have gained, and feedback regarding the class.
