Prerequisites
This course is dedicated to students with at least basic knowledge of compositional semantics. Therefore, passing a prior course in semantics (an introduction to formal semantics) and a basic understanding of formal representation of natural-language meaning are required. Furthermore, the course is taught in English. The students should know the language well enough to be able to follow linguistic presentations, read semantic articles and discuss them in English. Their presentation is also in English.

Course objectives
The main goal of this course is to provide the students with an overview of selected topics in the contemporary semantic research, to teach them to read critically semantic articles and to discuss their content with peers.
Learning outcomes
The students will be able to:
- understand selected topics in the contemporary semantic research
- follow semantic argumentation
- read critically articles in the field of compositional semantics
- discuss their content with peers
- present on a selected advanced topic in semantics

  • In the class, we will read and discuss articles in the contemporary semantic research that concern the following topics (the exact topics will be jointly selected with students depending on their interests):
  • - methods in semantics
  • - event semantics
  • - quantification
  • - modification
  • - part-whole structures
  • - mass/count distinction
  • - degree semantics
  • - modality
  • - situation semantics

Requirements for the successful completion of the course: 1) systematic and active attendance, 2) presenting a semantic problem concerning a selected topic and leading a discussion with peers (in English).
