The course assumes a basic orientation in the history of European art in a global context.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the work of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). The course will explore various aspects of Rubens' work, including painting, printmaking, and invention, within a broader geographical context known as the "Atlantic World." In addition to traditional approaches to artistic production, focusing on iconography and patronage, the course will also consider topics like the transfer of ideas, gender, and period taste.
Learning outcomes
Students: will have a detailed knowledge of the work of Peter Paul Rubens will be better oriented in Flemish art of the 17th century will be familiar with period artistic and workshop practice will be able to view the topics under study from different methodological perspectives

  • Topics of introductory classes: 1) Historiography, Rubens and Flemish art 2) Predecessors, teachers, and art in the Netherlands in the 16th century 3) Rubens and Central Europe Topics of student presentations: 4) Rubens and new forms of religious imagery (iconography, form and function) 5) Rubens and mythology (literary sources, subjects, collectors) 6) Rubens and "other hands" (collaboration with other artists and workshop praxis) 7) Rubens and festivities (invention and participation) 8) Rubens and women (objects, patrons, colleagues) 9) Rubens and printmaking (inspiration, marketing, and transfer) 10) After Rubens ("legacy," students, reception)
