Prerequisites
This course is intended primarily for the students of graduate programmes of Theory and history of film and audiovisual culture.
It is an adequate combination with the course FAVp021: Production, distribution and exhibition practice.

Course objectives
Film and audiovisual education is a dynamically developing field at the boundary of artistic and pedagogical practices. In the Introduction to Film and Audiovisual Education course, students* will be introduced to the principles of forming disciplinary methods, techniques and preparatory exercises. The seminar will be devoted to introducing the basic assumptions of the field consisting in the use of the expressive possibilities of film for pedagogical purposes. The seminars will be mainly designed as practical illustrations of didactic principles in which students will be involved as participants and co-creators. Students* will be introduced to the elementary principles of general didactics, the realities of school operation and the basic legislative framework, shaping the environment of primary and secondary schools. Emphasis will be placed on outlining potential career opportunities in the field in the environment of film festivals, distribution, the cinema space, and the school environment.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will:
- be oriented in organizations and institutions moving in the field of F/AV education
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of the field's research and methodological frameworks
- be able to formulate basic disciplinary assumptions and apply them in the development of elementary didactic exercises
- gain an elementary knowledge of the curricular framework and the necessary legislation defining the school environment

  • What is film and audiovisual education?
  • The lecture will introduce the background of the field, the range of initiatives operating in the field, as well as the fundamental research that defines the field. We will present (among others) the projects oborovamapafav.cz, the certified F/AV methodology, the filmvychova.cz portal, as well as the first F/AV textbook Filmouka.

  • Didactical Basics
  • Organisation of teaching at primary, secondary and primary schools and its necessary curricular and legislative context. General-didactic minimum for planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching. Experiences and examples from didactics of so-called expressive disciplines (e.g. art education).

  • Fundamentals of General Didactics / Consultation of Didactic Exercises. The lecture will present the possibilities of integrating film and audiovisual education into formal education. Presentation of concrete examples of didactic exercises and their integration into teaching.

Assessment methods
Students will be given a semester-long assignment at the first lesson on 18.10.
- It will be a creative-didactic exercise that ideally combines both awareness of current methods, techniques and trends in film and AV education and the basics of general didactics.
- The outcome will combine the competences acquired through the study of film studies (narrative analysis, style analysis, technique and technology...) and translate it into a didactic activity.
- The presentation of each proposal, lasting 20 to 30 minutes, including feedback and group discussion, will take place at the last session on 13 December.

MgA. Lucie Hlavicová

She works as a lecturer, animator, dramaturge, methodologist and consultant. She cooperates with Studio Scala, where she leads courses for young viewers and authors. She is finishing her doctoral studies at JAMU with the topic of film/audiovisual education. Since March 2023, she has been the President of the Association for Film and Audiovisual Education, from 2021-2023 she was a member of the committee and was responsible for professional and journalistic outputs, studies and articles. She is a member of the wider Film/Audiovisual Education Consultative Group of the National Institute of Education. She has authored a number of F/AV disciplinary research papers. Co-author of the first F/AV textbook for primary schools, Filmouka. She teaches F/AV at FAMU and UTB in Zlín.

MgA. Jiří Forejt, Ph.D.

Doctor of the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts, where he is involved in the development of the Film and Audiovisual Education curriculum with the aim of establishing the first academic institute for the approval of film education teachers in the Czech Republic. Expert in film education, amateur and independent film at NIPOS, annually prepares the national film festival Czech Vision. He has been cooperating with the international CinEd project as a main tutor for a long time. He is a dramaturg, lecturer and author of many film education texts and materials, co-founder of Free Cinema, and a member of the ASFAV committee. Co-author of the popular educational books Little Photographers and Filmouka.

Mgr. Miloš Makovský, Ph.D.

Miloš Makovský is primarily engaged in art education and its connection with other artistic and art science disciplines, especially film and audiovisual. As an expert, he cooperates with the National Pedagogical Institute of the Czech Republic on revisions of the Framework Educational Programmes for Primary Education. At the Pedagogical Faculty of Jan Evangelista Purkyně University he is the head of the Department of Visual Culture and a teacher. At FAMU he is a guarantor of the course Pedagogical Assumptions.
