Course objectives
Students will be introduced to the historical development of ethnomusicology, the basic terminology and methodology of the discipline and the object of its study.
The seminar is a two-semester course.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- understand the object of research in ethnomusicology;
- clearly characterize the historical development of the discipline;
- deal with the basic literature of the discipline;
- discuss the subject matter in terminological terms

  • Folk song collecting and collectors, institutions and editorial activities
  • Folk instrumental music in the Czech lands
  • The theory of folk song and the cataloguing texts and tunes
  • Between comparative musicology and ethnomusicology
  • Folklore movement in the Czech lands and the ethnocultural traditions
