Course objectives
The course is mainly focused on the role of Barcelona as a literary space in Catalan and Spanish literature. In the opening two lectures, the history of the city and its importance for both mentioned national literatures will be outlined, especially the key role of Barcelona within the Spanish and Catalan book industry. The remaining lectures will be dedicated to the portrayal and role of Barcelona in selected literary works, which will always have one specific feature in common – their stories will take place in the Catalan metropolis. Emphasis will be clearly placed on prose work, although the last lecture of this course will also be devoted to the portrayal of Barcelona in poetry and plays. The course is primarily intended for students of Catalan and Spanish, but those interested in Barcelona as a literary space are also welcome, so the course is taught in Czech, although at least a basic passive knowledge of Spanish or Catalan is expected to work with some materials.
