Course objectives
The aim of this course is to apply the skills and knowledge required for qualitative field research with focus on participant observation and conduction of interviews.
Learning outcomes
After completing this cross-cultural and transdisciplinary internship course, students will acquire first-hand fieldwork experiences, they will be able to develop their own research project based on the methodological framework of participant observation and conduction of interviews, evaluate, and determine sources for their own project, and demonstrate their ability to compile, assess, and analyze information.
Syllabus
  • For the SCU group, by traveling with a group of Central European (Czech and Slovak) students, the students do fieldwork on different topics and compare the new cultural setting with the culture of their origin (which is Taiwanese), in order to prepare the oral presentations and the written assignment.

Teaching methods
For the SCU group, in addition to the two-week long fieldwork, the students remain in contact with lecturers (Wei-lun Lu and Yu-min Chang) at MU after the fieldwork, discussing the similarities and the differences of the cultures.
Assessment methods
For the SCU group, the students give a mid-term oral presentation 2 weeks after the completion of the fieldwork. 6 weeks after the completion, the students give the final oral presentation. 8 weeks after the completion of fieldwork, the students submit the final written report to the Information System.
For the SCU group, the following grading components apply:
- Mid-term presentation (30%)
- Final oral presentation (30%)
- Final written presentation (40%)
