Assessment methods
To successfully complete the course, you need to earn at least 60 points out of 100

Students can choose between two options:
(A)
► Completion of a shorter seminar paper (2 pages = 3,600 characters) = max. 40 points
► Exam – longer written test (PC) = max. 60 points

(B)
► Completion of a longer seminar paper (4 pages = 7,200 characters) = max. 60 points
► Exam – shorter written test (PC) = max. 40 points

Seminar paper
The task is to write a short text of 2 pages (A) or 4 pages (B) on a selected sociological topic. It will not be a free essay but a short analytical essay based on reading. For example, it can be a description of the thoughts of a particular sociologist (e.g., Weber, Durkheim, Marx, Parsons, Bourdieu) and an evaluation of their contribution; a comparison of approaches between two or more authors (e.g., how Marx and Weber approached social classes); an analysis of a selected sociological concept according to different sociologists (e.g., gender, social capital, social institutions, social roles, integration...); or an analysis of a selected phenomenon using sociological concepts.
Students must base their work on the required reading (at least one of three books); additional texts can be used as desired. The citation format is optional but must be consistent throughout the text and follow the Harvard citation style, not footnotes.

Final exam
It will primarily take the form of an online questionnaire that you will complete at home. It consists of four (B) or six (A) open-ended questions based on the required course readings.

Grading scale:
A: 92-100 points
B: 84-91 points
C: 76-83 points
D: 68-75 points
