Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to deepen the understanding of ADHD in adulthood, both at the level of clinical manifestations and psychiatric and psychological practice. Students will learn in detail about the manifestations of ADHD in adulthood and how it changes throughout an individual's life. Therefore, we will build on the more commonly known symptomatology of previous periods to gain a comprehensive understanding of this disorder. Our intention is to provide students with relevant information in context, and to develop their competence in clinical psychological reasoning. Students will learn to recognize ADHD in its entirety as a divergence that undoubtedly brings many difficulties, but also understand the specific cognitive aspects that can be supported and positively used to realize an individual's potential.
Learning outcomes
By completing the course, students will gain a detailed insight into ADHD in adulthood.
They will learn about the symptoms, co-morbidities and functional difficulties often associated with ADHD. Thus, they will gain a deeper understanding of the life of an adult with ADHD and the conflicts they may experience when confronted with the requirements of their daily life.
Students will familiarize themselves with the classification of the disorder in the classification systems of the ICD and DSM in the historic and present perspective, including diagnostic guidelines and their comparison.
Students will learn the procedures for detection, diagnosis and treatment of ADHD in adulthood as well as the factors.
A detailed discussion of the factors that influence these processes will facilitate understanding of clinical practice and the difficulties we face in this context, where ADHD is confused with other disorders and under-diagnosed in adult population, including ADHD in women. This insight is also transferable to the critical assessment of the clinical approach to other psychiatric disorders and will ideally help increase awareness of the future professionals, especially in the field of clinical psychology.
Using ADHD as an example, students will also develop skills in clinical psychological reasoning and differential diagnosis, both in relation to ADHD and in general.
Students will be able to use the acquired knowledge and skills in clinical practice, research, but also to some extent in the field of counselling or occupational psychology.
