Course objectives
Latin Grammar V is designed for students of major or completus study plan. The major part of the course focuses on the use of verbal forms in indirect reported discourse, which in Latin is often much longer than in modern languages and in which specific verbal forms or constructions can appear. Besides that, students gain insight into heterogeneous groups of comparative clauses and functions of cases in simple clauses.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- paraphrase the basic rules of Latin normative syntactic phenomena studied within the course (vide the syllabus of the course);
- translate clauses into Czech and Latin;
- analyze complex Latin sentences;
- explain the use of grammatical phenomena in Latin sentences;
- use synonymic constructions and explain differences in their meaning;
- describe the essentials of the theoretical framework used for research into Latin syntax in current Latin linguistics;
- sketch the system of Latin subordinate clauses and non-finite verb constructions;
- identify functions of individual cases.
Syllabus
  • 1st week: sequence of tenses.
  • 2nd – 5th week: revision and additional information concerning complement, relative and adverbial clauses. 6th and 7th week: comparative clauses (quantifying and qualifying type, use of tenses and moods).
  • 8th – 11th week: indirect reported discourse with special attention paid to conditional clauses (general rules or rather tendencies in use of verbal forms, usual verbal forms found conditional sentences dependent on different types of predicates).
  • 12th – 13th week: introduction to semantic and syntactic functions of Latin cases (basic functions of Latin cases, comparison to Czech case system).
