Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to teach students how to effectively and safely work with computer and to manage operations that are necessary in commercial practice, public administration and so on. This is primarily a matter of more advanced work with text and table processors and with presentation tools, making use of cloud services, searching data and materials (images, videos) on the internet and their following use or processing (editing, conversion), effective and safe administration of operating system, software and e-mail (actualization, back up).
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will:
- more effectively work with text and table processor;
- know advantages and disadvantages of online (cloud) services and will know how to work with them;
- know the principles of creating multimedia presentations;
- be able to convert various formats (of pictures, videos, sounds, …);
- be able to download necessary materials from the internet (pictures, videos, sounds) and then to work with them;
- be able to effectively surf the internet;
- know the principles of safe work with computer;
- effectively and safely work with e-mail;
- manage the principles of ordinary computer administration (OS and software actualization, disk back-up, …).
Syllabus
  • 1. Advanced operations in word processors (predominantly MS Word): content generation, styles, indices, mail merge, page break, sections, track changes, comparing two documents, insert pictures, page numbering, macros, …; possibilities and limits of using regular expressions (wildcard characters); keyboard shortcuts;
  • 2. advanced operations in table processors (predominantly MS Excel): cells formatting, formulas, functions, graphs, …;
  • 3. presentation tools (predominantly MS PowerPoint): principles of presentation creating, insert pictures, settings of transitions between slides, …;
  • 4. familiarization with Google Docs, LibreOffice, OpenOffice (advantages/disadvantages); cloud back-up (Google Drive, OneDrive);
  • 5. conversion between various formats (pictures, videos, sounds, PDF, …); downloading videos form the internet (YouTube etc.), extraction of soundtrack; pictures downloading and editing; OCR; virtual printers;
  • 6. surfing the internet (Google – pictures, advanced search, …), internet dictionaries and translators use; possibilities of downloading materials form various online web back-ups (like ulozto.cz, torrents etc.) and its legal effects;
  • 7. safety and privacy protection on the internet (browser settings, anonymous browsing, anti-virus software, passwords, …);
  • 8. working with e-mail (POP3 and IMAP protocols, sending attachments, sending large files, message filters, …);
  • 9. file compression and decompression (MS Windows, Total Commander, ALZip); installation and uninstallation of programs, disk cleanup;
  • 10. actualization of operating system (MS Windows), programs; disk and computer back-ups.
  • The list of areas is only orientational. Putting further topics according to student’s knowledge and needs during semester is allowed.

Teaching methods
The course has a form of practical exercises with the computer (either in computer classroom or with student’s own computer).
Assessment methods
The course contents pure practical exercises on the computer, so the attendance is compulsory. Two absences, not including the introductory lecture, are allowed. For passing the credit the student should successfully complete the final practical tasks and the test (minimum of 65 %).
