- Course objectives
- Characterology is a synchronic view of a system of a particular language. The term "characterology" was coined by V. Mathesius as the title of his university lectures. In keeping with this, the course will provide a systematic analysis of Modern English based on functionalist and structuralist viewpoint in the Czech Anglicist tradition. The overall method used is that of contrasting English to Czech. The analysis has two stages: first, the attention is given to naming units of the particular language (vocabulary, lexis); in the second stage, the focus is on the sentence (functional syntax).
