Course objectives
Course description. The main part of the lecture will consist of interpretations of selected poems from those Czech poets who can be described as representatives of avant-garde groups and streams in the years 1918-1945. The main aim will be to point out specific features of individual style of certain authors (stylistic features of a creative stage, stream, school and generation). The lecture will also show some possibilities of using the poems of the poets in question in teaching of literature at secondary schools and the reception of single collections of poetry by contemporary criticism. The authors will be dealt with in roughly chronological order after a brief introduction about the term of avant-garde itself and about the changes in estimation of avant-garde movements.

Poetical controversy between Halas ("Staré ženy") and Neumann ("Staří dělníci"). 18. The poetical response to the death of Masaryk. 19.-21. Poetry inspired by the autumn of 1938. 22. The works of resistence in the years of Nazi occupation. 23. Josef Palivec: Pečetní prsten. 24. Jiří Orten: Cesta k mrazu. 25.-26. The reflection of May 1945 in Czech poetry. 27. Poetical controversy between Kainar (Veliká láska) and Biebl (Bez obav). 28. Concluding remarks upon the post-war artistic development of those authors who entered literature in the period between the two wars (Nezval, Seifert, Závada, Holan, Hrubín, Zahradníček).
