Syllabus

This course is aimed at providing an overview in the area of subject description of documents and also orientation in retrieval languages. Includes: Introduction to the subject and terminology. Normative materials for subject description. Subject analysis, typology of retrieval languages and systems. Classification systems - brief history, advantages and drawbacks of this approach, UDC, DCC, LC Classification and others. Verbal systems - brief history, advantages and drawbacks of this approach, LCSH, MeSH, PSH and others. Situation in subject description within the Czech Republic and the Masaryk University in Brno.
