- Course objectives
- The course is based on video screening of selected Czech films in full version, subtitled in English. Some periods of Czech cinema history and some aspects of the typical genres or styles may be illustrated by short film clips. The class usually begins with a short introduction to the historical and cultural context. The screening will be followed by discussion. Assessment: essay. Literature: Hames, Peter: The Czechoslovak New Wave (Berkeley, Los Angeles and London 1985); Liehm, Mira & Liehm, Antonín J.: The Most Important Art: Soviet and Eastern European Film After 1945 (Berkeley, Los Angeles, London 1980); Škvorecký, Josef: All the Bright Young Man and Woman (Toronto 1971). Films: to be specified.
