Course objectives
The course deals with the application of linguistics in the field of creating texts. It is based on practical work, mainly translation, which offers the opportunity of contrastive study of language phenomena in English and in Czech. Students translate short passages of texts of various types from English into Czech, submit their translations electronically for correction, and then compare their work with that of others in the group and with teachers' comments. In addition, they learn the basic concepts from the field of translation studies and translation theory. The importance of a very good command of the target language of translation (i.e. Czech) is stressed throughout the course.
