Course objectives
We will concentrate on the czech fairy-tale of the 19th century, especially on stories created by K. J. Erben and B. Němcová. In order to understand them better, we will discuss mostly the structure of these stories and compare them with other fairy-tales, which carry similar motives. Our main goal isn't to gain the superb historical knowledge about the theme (although we'll be trying to), but to get a key to the fairy-world, in which the most important problem is the phenomenon of "magic". The crucial question of the course is: why does the Bajaja's horse (the horse of a young prince from a Němcová's fairy-tale) speak? Is it possible? And if yes obviously what is it for? Is it objective, even though (or because?) it is fantastic? And what are the rules of the genre of fairy-tale?
