Course objectives
The course will examine the works of Irish playwrights from the post-war period until recent times. Course issues will include: the comic and the roles of humour; uses of past and history; memory and nostalgia; popularity of monologic dramatic forms; possibilities and boundaries of realism; women in Irish drama; representation of violence; uses and re-workings of Irish dramatic traditions; issues of national and sexual identities etc.
Syllabus
  • The works of the following playwrights will be examined: Samuel Beckett, Brendan Behan, Tom Murphy, Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness, Anne Devlin, Conor McPherson, Martin McDonagh, Marina Carr, Mark O'Rowe, Stella Feehily, Marie Jones, Enda Walsh etc.
Assessment methods (in Czech)
Přednáška/seminář 1/1; účast na seminářích 70%, referát a závěrečná seminární práce.
