Course objectives
The course will focus on the Catholic preachings written and lectured after the year 1620 and its position among other literary genres. Several topics will be discussed, such as the concept of Baroque literature, continuity with earlier sermons, theoretical background of the preachers or specifics of preaching as a genre (literary and non-literary functions, ideal structure of preaching, various types of preachings and artistic aspects of the texts). We will especially focus on particular texts by a number of preachers and observe the transformations of the genre throughout time. We will rely on the periodization introduced by Cerny (Praha 1994), Kopecky (Brno 1968) and Sladek (Praha 2005). Apart from the chronological point of view the thematic aspect will be also considered (e.g. wedding sermons, funeral sermons, sermons devoted to Jan Nepomucky etc.). Among the preachers discussed in class will be Matej Vaclav Steyer, Daniel Nitsch, Bohumir Hynek Bilovsky, Frantisek Matous Krum and Tomas Lastovka. The non-Catholic preachings will also be mentioned for sake of possible confrontation. Texts for interpretation will be chosen from modern editions of Baroque works (Vasica 1933, Kalista 1941, Sladek 1995, 2000 and 2005, Pavera 1999, Lifka 1995, Kopecky 1998 and Horakova 2000). Nevertheless the original old prints will be presented as well (in order to learn dealing with text in blackletter).
Syllabus
  • The concept of Baroque literature and its specific concept in Czech territory. The crucial literary genres after the year 1620. The periodization proposals of this period (17th – 18th century). The speciality of homiletic genre (its function, structure and components of artistic value; various types of preachings – humanistic, conceptual and emblematic; Sunday preachings vs. occasional ones). Theoretical background of preachers and principles of composing (Balbin). Individual preachers (e.g. Steyer, Nitsch, Bilovsky, Krum, Lastovka) and their works (poetics of the particular author and artistic aspect of preachings – e.g. metaphors, symbols, synonyms, concepts); different approach to the same topics; the difference bettween Sunday sermons and the occasional ones (plus considering the recipient).
