Course objectives
Czech Medieval Theatre The course (including seminars) should present to students main thematic and developmental directions of medieval theatre in Bohemia (both religious and secular) considering the contemporary Czech and world context (mostly the Central European region). First we will focus on textual cycles characteristic of medieval drama in Bohemia (i.e. the Latin liturgical ceremony "Visitatio sepulchri", Easter drama and its rich tradition of bilingual plays etc.) from the point of view of the content, dramatic form and also theatrical aspects. Special attention will be then paid to the most significant document of the Czech medieval theatre, the "Mastičkář" - the Spice Merchant (with respect to Bachtin's conception of the so-called carnival culture), and its different interpretations. Students will participate in the seminar by reading selected dramatic texts and presenting a short paper on a given theme.
