Course objectives
Ingmar Bergman's film legacy has been mercilessly analyzed by army of interpreters and thus, it seems almost impossible to add anything new to the knowledge base of greatest living film-maker. However, from concurrent Czech Republic „Bergman Studies“ point of view it seems we still lack some evidence of most interesting efforts of this genius of world cinema. Relatively minor and aloof of general celebration and critical hype there emerge some exclusive points of research interest. Among them prominent places are occupied by the films of early phase (Crisis, It Rains On Our Love, 1946; Music In Darkness, 1948; Port of Call, 1948; Prison, Thirst 1949; To Joy, 1950), Bergman's comedies and last but not least the titles of late period that emphasize its formal merits (A Passion, 1969; The Magic Flute, 1975; From The Life Of The Marionettes, 1980). In this course we will analyse not only film texts with the respect to style and form, bud we will also take a closer look at Bergman's theatre/radio/TV productions. Moreover, we will examine popular culture efforts and its sometimes loving, sometimes probing or even a dehonesting look of Bergman and great auter's iconic role in cultural life.

  • 1. An introduction: methods, approaches, resources. 2. Early years: Bergman as scriptwriter and story editor. Bris commercials. 3. Films of the 40s. 4 and 5. Films of the 50s. 6. Experiments with colour, humor and rhythm: The Magic Flute, All These Women, A Passion; „Small“ comedies. 7. Bergman's „out-takes“ (TV documents, editorials, making-ofs etc.). 8. Paraphrase, allusion, remake: Bergman, mass-media and popular culture (web pages and hommages). 9. The Other Love: Bergman and Theatre I. 10. The Other Love: Bergman and Theatre II. 11. Bergman's actors and collaborators as directors: films, contexts, analogies, stylistic approaches. 12. Final Remarks, Discussion, Essay Topics.
