Course objectives
The aim of the course which is the continuation of the course with the same name from the autumn semester, is to prove general conclusions reached during the previous course on account of analysis of particular parts of all three Latin works (Aulus Gellius: Noctes Atticae, Macrobius: Saturnalia, Martianus Capella: De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii).
Syllabus
  • 1. Aulus Gellius: Noctes Atticae: - analysis of the following texts: Gell., N. A. Praefatio; Capitula; III, 2, 2nn.; V, 17; XVI 3-4.
  • - the style and content (miscellanea, constant variation of topics and forms, content preferences, intentions of author).
  • 2. Ambrosius Theodosius Macrobius: Saturnalia: - analysis of the following texts: Macr. Sat. Praefatio; I, 3, 2nn.; I, 16, 21nn.
  • - style analysis (Platonic / Ciceronic dialogue type, compositional unity, neoplatonic educational model).
  • 3. Martianus Capella: De nuptiis Mercurii et Philologiae: - analysis of the following texts: Mart. Cap. Praefatio; I, 21-23; II, 133-141; III, 234-238. - the style analysis, mixture of genres (Apuleian novel frame, Menippean satire, Aristotelic systematic explanation, allegory of divination of septem artes liberales as the programme of the work).
