Course objectives
Overview of the most important moments, authors and works of the Macedonian literature. Mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius; Cyril and Methodius’s disciples in the Macedonian region; Macedonian literature under Ottoman Turkish rule; damaskins; folklore; 19th century Macedonian literature; multinationality of Macedonian authors; literature written in Macedonian dialects; Macedonian literature in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia; standardizing Macedonian as the official literary language at the end of World War II and the evolution of Macedonian literature in socialist Yugoslavia. Macedonian literature in the independent Republic of Macedonia. On successful completion of the course student will acquire knowledge of the development of Macedonian literature and he will deepen his skill to analyse and interpret a literary text.

  • The oldest Old Church Slavonic literature. Cyril and Methodius’s disciples in Macedonia. Medieval scriptoria. Damaskin literature. From medieval texts to the Enlightenment. Joakim Krčovski and Kiril Pejčinović. Typical and distinctive features of the National Awakening. Folklore. The Miladinov Brothers. Other collectors of folklore. Translators of Macedonian folklore. Macedonism – its origins and development. Krste Misirkov and his works. Vojdan Černodrinski and Macedonian Blood Wedding. Macedonian drama, poetry and prose between the wars. Kosta Racin. Literature during World War II. The beginnings of post-war Macedonian literature. Five post-war generations of Macedonian authors.

Teaching methods
Lectures, home reading, class discussion and thorough home preparation on weekly basis.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for granting the credit: regular attendance (maximum of 3 absences during a semester) and participation in class discussion. The exam has a form of a written test.
