Course objectives
Giving the survey of the most important trends and the most significant authors and works within the history of Serbian literature since the ancient within the end of 19th century is the main target of the course. Lecture brings the information on Cyril and Methodius tradition; analyzing legends, biographies of Serbian sovereigns; discussing the reverberation of the battle of Kosovo within folk literature; analyzing literature of the period of Ottoman hegemony and in more details the literature of national awakening (D. Obradović). Literature of national revival is analyzed comprehensively (V. S. Karadžić, etc.), Serbian romanticism, realism and effort to approach modern European literary trends. At the end of course the student would be able to understand and explain basic trends of Serbian literary flowering since the end of 19th century.

  • Authors of medieval Serbian literary treasure and features of Serbian medieval literature
  • Literature of the end of medieval Serbian state
  • Literary life during the period of Turkish domination
  • Kosovo cycle and Kosovo myth
  • Serbian heroic epics and folklore
  • The Enlightenment and classicism in Serbian literature (J. Rajić, D. Obradović, L. Mušicki, etc.)
  • Beginnings of Serbian national revival and V. St. Karadžić First wave of Serbian romanticism (S. Milutinović-Sarajlija, L. Nenadović, Njegoš)
  • Romantic poetry of fifties to seventies of 19th century
  • Beginnings of Serbian realism (S.Marković), "narodništvo" (rural idealizing literature, psychological –realistic prose)
  • Bloom of Serbian realism of the end of 19th century
