- Course objectives
- Medieval Latin is a historic, cultural and linguistic phenomenon, continuing the old tradition of Latin language and literature of Classical Antiquity. The main objective of the course is to introduce advanced students of the Middle Ages to Medieval Latin language and literature. The course is divided in two parts. At the end of the course, students should be familiar with Medieval Latin morphology, syntax and vocabulary. They should also be able to translate texts of various Medieval Latin authors.
- Syllabus
- Characteristics of Medieval Latin (phonetics, morphology, syntax, vocabulary).
- Forms and genres of medieval Latin prose.
- Forms of medieval Latin poetry (metrical, rhythmical and rhythm-metrical poetry).
- Reading, translation and analysis of selected medieval Latin texts and authors: Vulgate. Gregory of Tours. Einhard. Widukind of Corvey. Ekkehard of Aura. Rhytmus de captivitate Paschalis Papae. Abelard and Heloise. Rahewin. Cosmae Pragensis Chronica Bohemorum. Chronica domus Sarensis. Chronicon Aulae regiae. Vita Karoli IV.
