Course objectives
The seminar aims at presenting the documents (international peace and coalition treaties, secret diplomatic agreements, major political treatises) related to the issue of political and national crises in the Balkans, from the end of the 17th century to the present. The course will primarily focus on documents related to the development in the Balkans in the 19th and 20th century.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction (principal sources and literature on the history of political crises in the Balkans);
  • 2. The Treaties of Karlowitz, Passarowitz and Belgrade;
  • 3. The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca of 1774; the Treaty of Bucharest of 1812; the Treaty of Adrianople of 1829;
  • 4. The Treaty of Paris, 1856; the Treaty of San Stefano; the Congress of Berlin, 1878;
  • 5. The Mürzsteg Reform Plan, 1903; documents on the Annexation Crisis, 1908–1909;
  • 6. The diplomatic background of the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913; the July Crisis of 1914;
  • 7. Secret treaties on the division of Turkey made during World War I; the Paris Peace Conference and the individual Balkan states;
  • 8. Little Entente and Balkan Entente in the inter-war period;
  • 9. Germany and the Balkan states during World War II; the Percentage Treaty of the powers regarding the Balkans;
  • 10. The Truman Doctrine and the Balkan states after World War II;
  • 11. The Belgrade and Moscow Protocols regarding the relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR; documents on the division of Cyprus;
  • 12. The war in Yugoslavia and the powers – the Dayton Agreement, the Ohrid Agreement, the status of Kosovo;
  • 13. Summary.

Assessment methods
The course is taught in the form of a seminar, combining the teacher’s presentation with in-class discussion of students’ seminar papers on assigned topics. To obtain a credit (“zápočet”), students must attend at least two thirds of all classes and write a seminar paper.
