Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to understand and explain the official cultural policy of the First Empire in France and the phenomenon of connection between the art and authoritarianism of Napoleon Bonaparte.
Syllabus
  • Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
  • 1. Cultural institutions and the official policy of France in the domain of art.
  • 2. Connection between Napoleon Bonaparte as sovereign and patron of the official French art.
  • 3. Team of cultural advisers and the artistic court of Napoleon Bonaparte.
  • 4. Painting, sculpture, architecture, arts and crafts in service to Napoleon's political representation.
  • 5. “Le Style Empire“ in support of assisting the official art, elimination of undesirable production.
  • 6. Press, theatre and government censure.
  • 7. Means of state propaganda and control of public opinion.
  • 8. Fashion and support of the clothing industry, main centres of textile production in the age of Napoleon.
  • 9. Formation of the modern museum structure in France. Artworks as property seized after the war and their transfer from the European private galleries to France. Louvre as “Musée Napoléon.“
  • 10. The Bonapartes in the position of official artistic patrons and the propagation of the Style Empire in Europe.
