Course objectives
The course aims at providing students with the basics of Latin grammar system. The emphasis is placed on gaining the gist of the system and of the functions of individual grammatical categories and their appropriate terming. Students master common forms of nouns and verbs and the principles of their formation. Attention is also paid to the most frequent syntactic features. Concerning the vocabulary, students are taught the frequent word roots many of which appear in the modern languages. At the end of this course, students are able to read elementary Latin texts. The knowledge of the principles of Latin grammatical system and the basic vocabulary gives students a good basis for the study of other languages.
Syllabus
  • The content of the course is exposed in unit 9-16 in Latina pro posluchače FF. Both grammar and assignments in the textbook make a part of the course. Additional material may be used if the whole textbook is completed.
  • Present subjunctive of all conjugations and verb esse; final and content clauses; negative pronouns; pronoun adjectives
  • Comparison of adjectives; forming and comparing of adverbs; verb group capio.
  • Perfect and supine stem, perfect indicative. Perfect passive participle and infinitive. Use of the perfect infinitive in the Accusative with infinitive.
  • Indefinite pronouns. Plusquamperfect and exact future indicative. Cum iterativum.
  • Direct questions. Perfect and plusquamperfect conjunctive.
  • Conjunctives in simple and subordinate clauses (conditional, cum historicum, indirect questions). Sequence of tenses.
  • Supine, perfect and future infinitives. Gerund and gerundive.
  • Accusative and nominative with infinitive construction. Ablative absolute.
  • Irregular verbs velle, nolle, malle, fieri, ire, ferre and their compounds. Semideponent verbs.
