Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to introduce the students to the modern theories of syllable structure. The first part of the course is focused on the Onset-Rhyme Theory. Students should be able to apply this theory crosslinguistically as well as from the diachronic perspective.
Syllabus
  • 1. Syllabic constituents: Onset, Rhyme, Nucleus 2. Representation of coda 3. Syllable weight: heavy vs. light syllables 3. Syllabification - Sonority Sequencing Principle, Maximal Onset Principle 4. Extrasyllabicity 5. Syllabification and cyclicity
