Course objectives
Main objective of the seminar is to learn Brazilian poetry of Romanticism. Seminars are oriented to analyses and interpretation of select texts. Individual reading of participants is important.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic historical, social, economical and cultural context of the Brazil of 19th Century; 2. Definition and characterization of Romanticism; 3. Short compendium of the Brazilian romantic prose; 4. Analyse of one important and paradigmatic Brazilian romantic novel(José de Alencar: O Guarani); 5. First Brazilian romantic poetry generation (1830s and 1940s, Gonçalves de Magalhães, Gonçalves Dias); 6. Interpretations of the poems "Song from the exile"; 7. Second Brazilian romantic poetry generation (1950s, Álvares de Azevedo, Casimiro de Abreu, Junqueira Freire, Vagundes Varela); 8. Third Brazilian romantic poetry generation (1960s and 1970s, Castro Alves, Sousândrade, etc.).
