Course objectives
The course offers a broadening view of the various tendencies in genres and styles in Czech literature in the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The students will learn selected authors and their works which are usually neglected in compulsory courses aimed at literature of the 19th and 20th century. Students will improve their interpretative skills by reading miscellaneous texts of different styles, genres and also quality. They will be able to demonstrate peculiar syncretism of literary movements and tendencies of a given period and they shift their interpretative possibilies out of too narrow frame of literary texts – towards other fine arts which are adequately chosen with regard to literature (plastic arts, sculpture). Upon successful completion of the course, students should make up knowledge in Czech language of the period "fin the siecle".
Students will be able to:
understand to literary development;
recognize poetics of literary movements;
identify the features of high brow and low brow literature;
learn how to deal with primary sources and literature on subject.
