Course objectives
The course will be focused on the outstanding Czech scenographers and their concepts that arise mostly during 20th century. The themes will be discussed within the context of world scaenography and supported by relevant AV-documents. At the end of the course students should be able to: identify the selected outstanding personalities within area of Czech stage design; discuss main tendencies of modern Czech stage design; appraise the influence of scenographic concepts in interaction with stage director´s work; analyse the ways of their interactions with practise abroad; evaluate the significance of Czech stage design in context of world scenography.

  • 1. What is scenography? (+ Methodology)
  • 2. The evolution of main stage design concepts at the beginning of the 20th century
  • 3. Modern art styles and their influence on the stage design
  • 4. Czech stage design in the first twenty years of 20th century
  • 5. Outstanding scenographers of the first half of 20th century and the influences of their works on the world stage design (Vlastislav Hofman, František Tröster a další)
  • 6. The avant-garde scenographers
  • 7. The 2nd world war and young scenographical generation
  • 8. Josef Svoboda and Laterna magika (the success of Laterna magika in Brussels and its influence on further practise)
  • 9. The scenographic experiments in the world and their influence on Czech stage design of the last years of 20th century
  • 10. Prague quadrennial
  • 11. Contemporary Czech stage design in context of world production (stage design after 1989)
  • 12. The influence of modern Czech stage design on world production
