Course objectives
The course will focus on the history and development of Czech film for children between the years 1945–1989. Lectures will concentrate mainly on fiction films but animated films will also be included. The film for children will be treated as a complex genre category. The main aim will be to introduce the strategies of production, distribution and exhibition of films for children or a definition of the specific status of the films in the context of Czech nationalized cinematography. Besides that we will concentrate on thematic and stylistic developments of the films within the studios in Prague and Zlín. In detail we will focus on the filmography of some key filmmakers (Ota Hofman, Věra Plívová-Šimková, Josef Pinkava, Hermína Týrlová etc.). The lecture will be supported by a set of screenings and debates with people engaged in the development of the genre.
