Course objectives
1. The aims: At the end of this course the students should be able to be acquainted with: • the outlines of Roman art in the age of Tetrarchy (imperial and private portraiture; particular types of state monuments) • the definition and typology of the architectonical type of the celebrative arch • the topographical situation of the Arch of Constantine in the town-plan of Rome • the two main groups of sculptural decorations on the Arch of Constantine: reused relieves and statues from other monuments; Constantinian relieves • the archaeological news about the Arch of Constantine from recent excavations and restorations • the current debate about the meaning of reused and reworked relieves and structures
