Course objectives
The aim of the course is to develop significantly the student´s knowledge in the area of phonetics and phonology acquired during the course POIA003 Fonetika a fonologie evropské portugalštiny. At the end of the course students should be able to:
understand the relation between the articulational and acoustical aspect of the speech;
explain the main articulational and acoustical differencies between the single portuguese vowels and consonants;
apply the theoretical knowledge in the area of the portuguese phonetics to the instrumental analysis of authentical speech records;
use software for speech analysis (SpeechStation2);
apply the acquired information about relevant phonetical features in the phonological evaluation of the speech records.

  • Topics:
  • introduction - portuguese vocalic and consonantal system;
  • speech production and perception;
  • basic acoustics;
  • spectrograms;
  • portuguese vowel acoustics;
  • portuguese consonant acoustics;
  • application of instrumental phonology.
  • Activities:
  • analysis of authentical speech records with SpeechStation2;
  • laboratory: reflection of phonological pairs in spectrograms.

the successfull completion of the final written test (success rate 75%) and elaboration of a small final project should prove the student´s understanding of the problematics as well as his practical skills acquired during the class.
