Course objectives
A two-term overview of the history of Bulgarian literature. The course contains information about the periods, the literary epochs, trends, schools and authors, with an analysis of genres and specific works and also leads toward a knowledge of written forms of expression within the given issues. Main aims of the course are: - to understand development of the Bulgarian literature - to understand the most prominent representatives of the Bulgarian literature - to understand Bulgarian literature as an integrative part of the building the national consciousness. At the end of course the student would be able to understand and explain basic trends of Bulgarian literary flowering since the end of 19th century.
Syllabus
  • 1. An Introduction to the Bulgarian literature and its context: Bulgaria – the Balkans – Europe. Models of the history of Bulgarian literature. The most famous Bulgarian literary historians. Principles of periodisation. Genre system.
  • 2. Old Bulgarian literature. The origin of the Slavonic letters. Life and activities of Cyril and Methodius. The Golden Age of the Bulgarian culture. The Ochrid and the Preslav Literary School – prominent writers and scholars.
  • 3. Apocryphal literature. Bogomil and Anti-Bogomil texts. Mystical literature. Beginnings of secular literature. Aesthetics and poetics of the Old Bulgarian literature.
  • 4. Literary production during the Second Bulgarian Empire (13th and 14th century). The Mount Athos Literary School and hesychasm. The Tarnovo Literary School and its prominent representatives.
  • 5. Old Bulgarian literature from the period of the Ottoman domination (from 15th to 18th century). New literary centres in the south-west Bulgaria. Damaskin texts. Literature of the Bulgarian Roman Catholics. Impact of the Illyrian movement for South Slavic unity on the Bulgarian literature.
  • 6. New Bulgarian literature. The period of Bulgarian National Revival. Main centres and constituencies of Revival movement. Paisius of Hilendar and his Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya. The Enlightenment. Sophronius of Vratsa.
  • 7. Beginnings of scholarly interest in Bulgarian language and culture. First secular schools in Bulgaria. Creation of literary language. First Bulgarian newspapers, magazines and book publishers. The struggle for independent Bulgarian church.
  • 8. Romantism. The National Liberation movement. Georgi Sava Rakovski. Roots of modern Bulgarian poetry, prose and drama. Petko Slaveykov.
  • 9. Hristo Botev. Realism. Lyuben Karavelov.
  • 10. Bulgarian Literature after the Liberation. Centres of literary and cultural life in the 1880s and 1890s. Ivan Vazov – Father of Bulgarian literature and the classic of Bulgarian literature in all literary genres from historical drama to poetry, prose and journalistic style.
  • 11. Memoirs of the Bulgarian Uprisings by Zahari Stoyanov and other memoirists. Development of realism in prose. Narodism. Socialism. Critical realism. Bay Ganyo by Aleko Konstantinov.

Teaching methods
Subject concept covers the form of obligatorily presence at the lectures. Home reading is expected.
Assessment methods
Credit requirements: participation (3 absences per semester are allowed), 2 written tests during the semester (2x10 points) and final test (40 points). Student needs to score a minimum total of 35 points from the tests to gain credit.
