Course objectives
After successfully finishing the class, the student will be able to: Explain the relationship between the scientific, the artistic and the popular view of new media technologies. Evaluate the impact of these visions on the actual design of new media. Describe the cultural forces that define shared visions of new media technologies. Interpret works by artists who offer visions of new media. Discuss the role of the artist in relation to the evolution of media.
Syllabus
  • This course will focus on the visions of electronic media in science, literary fiction and popular culture. Each seminar will focus on a particular text. Mass media models will be analyzed in comparison to Orwell's and Huxley's antiutopias. Blending of the real and the virtual will be analyzed in Videodrome, Matrix and eXistenZ. Visions of the Internet, virtual worlds and the hacker culture will be analyzed in texts by William Gibson, Vernor Vinge and Neal Stephenson.

Teaching methods
The seminar will be based on discussions of particular texts. Some material will be screened in class.
Assessment methods
The student is evaluated based on and required to hand in: 1. A blog post about one of the readings. 2. A 4-6 page essay interpreting a narrative work of art which represents a vision of new media technologies.
