Course objectives
The course is named by the only book which Pavel Tichý ever published. The aim of this book was not only to expose the most comprehensive version of his logic, but to demonstrate its power to explicate areas where Gottlob Frege and others (e.g. Russell, Church) did not succeed. The course is based on careful reading and interpretation of the selected chapters. Thus the objective is to understand the various theories given by Tichý in the book, which enables students to solve many puzzles discussed frequently within philosophy and logic.
Syllabus
  • - function as a mere correspondence of arguments and values vs. function as a procedure (Tichý: construction); Frege's oscillation between the two notions
  • - Tichý's philosophical defence of constructions
  • - three Vicious Circle Principles
  • - Tichý's objectual notion of variables
  • - Tichý's definition of constructions
  • - Tichý's ramified theory of types (as a combination of Church's simple TT and Russell's ramified TT)
  • - Tichý's objectual conception of logic and his objectual explication of entailment and substituition
  • - Frege's Sinn, Church's concept, Russell's propositional function reinterpreted
  • - languages as codes and Tichý's solution of Liar paradox
  • - Tichý's approach to modal parameter (possible worlds) and his defense of temporal parameter; resulting intensionality
  • - Tichý's Transparent intensional logic as tool for analysis of natural language;
  • - aboutness
  • - Tichý's analyses of notional and propositional attitudes
  • - Tichý's defence of 'two-dimensional' conception of inference
