Course objectives
After finishing the course students:
- understand the specifics of memoir literature;
- are able to recognize general information from lectures in selected texts;
- are familiar with potential interpretative approaches;
- verify acquired skills in individual interpretations of chosen texts;
- deepen their interpretative skills.
In this seminar concrete works of memoir literature, chosen by the students from the items "on offer", will be analysed. Analyses of memoirs from all periods of literary development (old literature, the nineteenth and twentieth century as well as present times) will also be part of the seminar. The aim of the seminar is for the students to learn how to work with testimonies of contemporaries, how to use them in their own work, and how to come to deeper understanding of life in the given era with their help.
Syllabus
  • (sessions 1-2) Characterisation of basic features of memoir literature. How to analyse a work of memoir literature. Verification of memoirs. The relationship of memoir literature to literature of fact, belles letters and journalism. The composition of a work of memoir literature. The list of books offered for analysis. The students chose the topic of their seminar paper. Participants may come with their own suggestions for books eligible for analysis. It is determined which of the chosen topics will be dealt with in which seminar session so that all participants are able to prepare well. (sessions 3-15) According to this plan (works are arranged in chronological order) students present their seminar papers. The presentation of each paper is followed by a discussion; each seminar session closes with the evaluation of the paper.
