Course objectives
This lecture focus on history, teoretical concepts and realizations of selected members (who creation is closely connected with art as well as with theater) of the Czech Association of Art, called Devětsil, in wide context of European art and theater history. After graduation, students will be able to interpret the interactions of the Czech art and the Czech theatrical avant-garde of the twenties, as well as in the other European avant-garde movements, they should be explain the history and theoretical background the Czech Association of Art Devětsil, the importance of theater and stage design in this Assosiation in the context of the contemporary Czech official theater and stage design, they should identify key figures movement.
Syllabus
  • 1) From fine arts to the stage design - theoretical definition of the sphere 2) European avant-garde (France, Germany, Italy, the Soviet Union) - contacts, links, inspirations 3) History of the Art Association Devětsil (Prague, Brno), exhibitions, magazines and publications, social events 4) From Primitivism to poetism, constructivism and surrealism (form of expression, themes, media, etc.). 5) Osvobozene Theatre - history, personality, theory, stage design 6) Architects and artists as stage designers: Bedrich Feuerstein, Antonin Heythum, Otakar Mrkvicka, Frantisek Muzika, Vit Obrtel, Zdenek Pesanek, Zdenek Rossman, Jindrich Styrsky, Alois Wachsman, Frantisek Zelenka, and others.
