Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to outline and explain the typology of the genre of novel and the main theories of this genre from the 18th century on. Students should also be able to caracterize some chosen subgenres (historiographic metafiction, bildungsroman, roman-fleuve, regional novel, detective novel) and identify their elements in representative portuguese novels.

  • 1. Introduction to the theory of novel and to the typology of this genre 2. Roman-fleuve (Eca de Queiros: Os Maias; Saramago: Levantado do Chao) 3. Historiographic metaficcion (Saramago: Historia do Cerco de Lisboa) 4. Bildungsroman (introspectivo) (Jose de Almada Negreiros: Nome de Guerra, Irene Lisboa: Voltar Atras Para Que?) 5. Regional novel (Ferreira de Castro: A Selva, Carlos de Olveira: Uma Casa na Duna, Manuel da Fonseca: Seara de Vento) 6. Detective novel (J. Cardoso Pires: A Balada da Praia de Caes, J.
