Course objectives
Lectures with guests will introduce the process of development, production, financing and distribution of documentary films. Questions of dramaturgy of single films, of commissions from producers or televisions, of production procedures, of different distribution channels, including festival circuit and online distribution, will be discussed deeper.
The process of documentary filmmaking differs in many aspects from the dominant part of cinema, fiction films. Instead of scriptwriting there is development of the project that includes fieldwork, historical research, and interview, use of investigative methods or work in archives. There are different distribution and market strategies for documentary films. On the other hand, there are also many similarities: documentaries are common part of theatrical distribution, even in the post communist countries, they are screened at film festivals and the big projects have comparable (often international) budgets. Lectures will focus on the current European context and the Czech situation, with particular looks on the development in the last twenty years.
