Course objectives
The course is dedicated to film as a primary source for historical research of cinema. Especially, it will focus on digitization as a fundamental change in production, distribution and projection of films, as well as our understanding of film and cinema history.

At the end of the lectures, students will:
- acquire knowledge of history of work with film as a primary source for research;
- understand how technology changes in distribtuion also influence our comprehension of cinema history;
- be able to reflect on their own work with films, be it analytical or historical.

  • The history of work with film as a primary source for historical research.
  • Availability of archival films, in the past and today.
  • Past changes in distribution of films, affecting their study.
  • Digitization and what it means for our work with films.
  • Case studies of different digitization projects.
