Course objectives
The course is based on the book by T. G. Masaryk of the same name. It deals with it as with a pioneering work of methodology of so called sociologism, especially through confrontation with Durkheim's "Le suicide" which follows Masaryk's German text. Also reception of this book by Giddens and Nýiri will be mentioned.

  • 1. Pre-sociological reflexion of the problem.
  • 2. Italian criminological school (Sighele, Rossi).
  • 3. Analysis of Masaryk's text with emphasis on the methodological aspect.
  • 4. Confrontation with Durkheim's elaboration of TGM's impulses.
  • 5. Sociologism and psychologism in the constitution of sociology as autonomous science discipline.
