Course objectives
The aim of the course is: to make students familiar with the beginnings of ancient times in Europe, the relationships between Europe and the Near East during this era and the continuity and differences between Minoan, Mycenaean and Greek civilizations; to explain basic differences in the ancient history, the history of Greece in the Dark Ages and the Archaic period and its cultural contribution to the global cultural heritage; to illustrate in detail the origins and history of Greek poleis and their society.
Syllabus
  • 1, Definition of the term "antiquity", ancient Near East states (basic characteristics); eastern oriental and western ancient slavery. Writing systems of the Near East and the Mediterranean. Chronology of Greek history.
  • 2, Beginnings of ancient times in eastern Mediterranean. Minoan civilization and its relation to the Greek history. Importance of Greek mythology as historical source.
  • 3, Mycenaean civilization, its state, political system, society, culture and relation to the ancient Greece.
  • 4, Arrival of Dorians and northwestern Greek tribes into Greece. Continuity and break-through between Mycenaean and Archaic Greek eras.
  • 5, Historical sources dealing with the Greek Dark Ages, the society of this time.
  • 6, Progressive tendencies of the Dark Ages. Significance of acceptance of the South Phoenician writing system.
  • 7, Process of creation of Greek poleis. State and society in the 8th century BC.
  • 8, Main changes in Greek life during the 7th century BC (economy, warfare, thinking, ethics). The emergence and gradation of social tensions. Greek oligarchy.
  • 9, The great Greek colonization and its influence on civilization.
  • 10, The oldest written laws of Greece. Early Greek tyrannis.
  • 11, Specifics of the history of Athens, Sparta and Corinth in the Archaic period.
  • 12, Pan-hellenic institutions. Greeks and barbars.
  • 13, Greek timocracy.
