Course objectives
To start with, the course will provide an introduction to the diplomatics of the imperial charter of the High Middle Ages, concentrating, in the first two units, on their exterior characteristics and their interior structure, highlighting the development of these elements under the rulers from the Hohenstaufen dynasty. After a unit dedicated to editorial methods, aims and challenges in general, students will be made familiar with the editorial practice of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH), which is widely regarded as a standard and has influenced editorial projects in many countries. Students will be required to actively take part in the discussions throughout the course. They will be asked to submit two brief homeworks on diplomatic and editorial issues and to prove their grasp of the matter by giving a short presentation on a select document of editorial interest. The course will be held in German in order to introduce students to the specific German terminology in the fields of diplomatics and editorial research. Presentations may also be held in English, alternatively.
