Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the problems of the study of municipal books in the Czech Lands from their introduction; and with some principles of critical editorial procedure. The lecture is focused on the development of municipal autonomy and town offices, the function of municipal law and judiciary. At the end of this course students will be able to understand the history of maintaing municipal books, their typology, the method of codicological and paleographical description and process of creating critical editions. Attention will be also paid to various partial aspects, such as the interpretation of watermarks, practice of reading the Old Czech texts and their transcription.

  • Development of utility writing in a town office
  • Editorial principles and interpretation of municipal book as an official source
  • The typology of the most frequent records in municipal books and their interpretation
  • Testamentary practice in the Czech Lands during the Early Modern Age
  • Agenda of the disputed judicial and common ground of the judiciary
  • The Memorial Book of Boskovice 1484–1565 (1581) as an illustrative example of the function of a municipal book
  • Recapitulation (summary of the theory, one lesson dedicated to practical presentations, reading texts in municipal books and transcription practice)
