Course objectives
The course will focus on selected theories, concepts, problems and challenges in the sociology of religion after the decline of the secularization paradigm and it will specifically deal with the post-secular concept. After the introduction of the post-secularity concept in relation to the sociology of religion, students will be familiar with key theories of secularization, the secularization debate and the secularization paradigm, and consequently the concepts connected to transformations and revitalizations of religions in the late modernity (desecularization, deprivatization of religions, the spiritual revolution), and the multiple modernity concept will be introduced. The second part of the course will be focused on delimitation and the character of secular/secularity/secularism and theorizing the problem of the relationship between “religious” and “secular” (especially the relationship between science and religion) in the contemporary “post-secular society”, academic criticism of the religion concept will be also reflected.
After having finished the course the students will be:
• able to understand better the secularization paradigm and secularization debate in the sociology of religion;
• familiar with the post-secular concept;
• able to use selected theories, approaches, and conceptions in the analysis of religion in the beginning of 21st century;
• familiar with the discussion about the borders between secular and religious;
• familiar with the contemporary criticism of the religion concept;
• able to better understand the role of religion in the contemporary globalized world;
