Course objectives
This course should provide a comprehensive view to the traditional Bulgarian culture and characterize the current trends in ethnological research in Bulgaria. In addition to traditional folk culture it should present a contemporary cultural and social phenomenons and problems (emigration, rural exodus, mass pop culture, "transition to democracy" etc.) At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain contemporary processes in Bulgarian society and traditional folk culture; create final essay on the topic; interpret his own experience in ethnological field researches in the Czech Republic or on the Balkans.
Syllabus
  • The interest of Czech and European ethnologists, anthropologists and specialist in Balkan culture in Bulgaria; Bulgaria's ethnic variety (sub-ethnic and ethnic minorities - Turks, Pomaks, Karakachans, Aromanians, Tatarians, Gagauz); Ethnographic zoning, classification of traditional folk culture, the most prominent representatives of Bulgarian ethnography and ethnology; Ethnology in the current research - ethnic problems, "religious" minorities, phenomenon chalga ('folk pop'), emigration to Western Europe and USA, everyday life during the Socialism and Postsocialism. An optional lessons of traditional dance called horo should be held (in collaboration with the ensemble Pirin).

Teaching methods
lectures, e-learning For the purpose of this lecture an e-learning course will be designed. All lectures will be available to students in the form of presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint. The e-learning course will include visuals (photos), music, study material in Czech (or in English), videos. The -learning allows students to observe very clearly the whole course, they can work easier with   lecture material, it allows also testing and facilitates communication with lecturers   via the discussion forum.
