Course objectives
Students will be able to orient themselves in the multidisciplinary methodological background of „cultural studies“;
They will critically evaluate both the usability of cultural studies methodologies and the borders thereof;
Student will improve their reading skills regarding English written academic text;
Students will practically apply diverse concepts and conceptual frameworks (of sociology, media theory, discourse analysis, gender studies, psychoanalysis) on the whole genre spectrum of Czech literature and culture, as well as to look for comparative context beynod the borders of national culture
Syllabus
  • 1 Introductory lesson – cultural turn, Ltd.;
  • 2 Ideology is everywhere – from water closet to academia;
  • 3 Media theory and criticism – the changing position of writing and literature;
  • 4 „Medium is the message“ – digital media, television
  • 5 Gender – all you ever wanted to know and were afraid to ask;
  • 6 „Discourse“ – we speak, we are spoken;
  • 7 Cultural industry – is there value out there?; censorship;
  • 8 Case study I – subculture(s): underground, fandom;
  • 9 Case study II – hybrid genres: comics, adaptation;
  • 10 Case study III – automythical foundation of Czech dissent;
  • 11 Case study IV – popular music and culture in general;
  • 12 Case study V – materiality of writing;
  • 13 Case study VI – 1989 and beyond: le capitalisme, mon amour
Teaching methods
Seminars, seminar discussions, homeworks
Assessment methods
70% attendance, reading the assigned test at home, active participation in class discussions. The main aaignment is the writing of an essay.
